History
Beginning in 2000, a group of Westport citizens got together to start a program that would help young students of color. What drew them to A Better Chance was its long and successful history. Founded in 1963, it has helped over 11,000 young scholars by giving them the opportunity to thrive in a safe and caring environment. Each year, ABC selects talented and motivated students of color from educationally disadvantaged areas, and submits their names to the prep school and public school A Better Chance programs all over the country. In a careful process, these school and community programs give careful consideration to which applicants they will admit.
After over two years of planning, fundraising, and extensive community participation, in the fall of 2002 A Better Chance of Westport opened the newly renovated ABC house, now called Glendarcy House, to the first four young men, who attended Staples High School.
Since then, more scholars have been added and now there are eight young men living in Glendarcy House striving to meet their highest potential through being part of the Westport community. They live in the house under the care of the resident directors, with the guidance of the ABC board of directors, and with special attention from their host families.
